Research participants sought for a new sleep study

Uppsala University is looking for individuals aged 18–32 years for a study on sleep & circadian rhythms.

Potential participants should:

  • have a BMI of 19.5–28 kg/m2
  • not be taking any medications (other than birth control pills)
  • not have any serious chronic illnesses
  • have had relatively regular sleep, eating, and activity habits, without excessively intense (>6 times/week or >6 hours/week) sports or exercise, during the last six months

In this study, we investigate how different diets affect sleep and 24-hour biological rhythms. The trial involves a total of about five nights with us in our sleep labs at the Department of Medical Cell Biology (MCB).

As a participant, you will first come to us at MCB for a brief meeting. If you meet all criteria and choose to participate, this will be followed by an initial blood test, a glucose tolerance test, and a short exercise bike test. After that, you will have an adaptation night of sleep before being randomly assigned to eat one of two types of common but standardized diets. We will provide the diet that you, as a participant, will follow for one week. While you are on the diet, we will, among other things, monitor your sleep, activity, and blood sugar levels.

After this, you will stay for approximately 2 days and 2 nights in our sleep labs at MCB. During the days, we will collect samples (blood, stool, and urine), while you continue to receive your meals from us. You will then be able to engage in reading, listening to music, discussions, and games. After the first session in our sleep lab, there will be a waiting period of about a week. This will be followed by a second round, with the other type of diet for one week and another approximately 2 days with us, including sample collection as in the first session.

Compensation:

Financial compensation is provided for study participation.

Research participants needed for new sleep study

Uppsala University are looking for people aged 18–32 years for a study on sleep and 24-h biological rhythms.

Potential particitants should:

  • have a BMI of 19.5–28 kg/m2
  • not take any medications (apart from contraceptives if applicable)
  • not have any major chronic diseases
  • have had relatively regular sleep, eating and activity habits, without too intensive (>6 times/week or >6 hours/week) practice of sports or exercise, during the past six months

In the study, we are investigating how different diets affect sleep and molecular circadian rhythms. The experiment includes a total of around five nights in our sleep facility at the Department of Medical Cell Biology (MCB), at Uppsala University.

As a potential participant, you will first come to MCB for a short meeting. If you meet all the
criteria and choose to participate, an initial blood sample will be taken, as well as a sugar load
and a short test on an exercise bike. You will then sleep for a night to acclimatize and then be
randomly assigned to eat one of two types of quite regular but standardized diets. Each weeklong diet will be fully provided by us. During this time, we will monitor your sleep, activity and blood sugar levels.

This will be followed by a longer session that lasts ~2 days in our sleep lab at MCB, with sleep in our sleep facility. During the day, we will collect samples from blood, stool and urine. You will continue to receive your meals from us, and you will be able to spend time reading, listening to music, discussions and games. After the first session in our sleep lab, there will be a waiting period of about a week, after which a second round will begin, with the other type of diet for a week. When the diet has been eaten for a week, you will again stay in our facility for ~2 days, with new samples taken as during the first session.

Financial compensation:

Financial compensation will be provided.
