Frequently Asked Questions
What is a clinical trial?
A clinical trial is a type of research in which new drugs, treatments, or medical procedures are tested on volunteers in order to develop treatments that are as effective and safe as possible.
How do you ensure that the studies comply with laws and ethical guidelines?
All studies comply with ethical guidelines and are reviewed and approved by the Swedish Medical Products Agency and the Ethical Review Board.
How is my personal information protected?
We comply with the GDPR and handle all information securely. Your information will never be shared without your consent.
Is it safe to participate?
Yes, all studies are closely monitored by medical staff, and the safety of participants is always the top priority.
How is eligibility determined?
Each study has specific criteria, such as age, gender, or health status. We match you with studies that fit your profile.
Why do different studies have different age limits?
Age limits are set based on the study’s purpose and medical safety requirements. The body can react differently depending on age, and to ensure reliable and safe results, the participant group must meet certain criteria.
What does it mean to stay overnight at the clinic?
If you are staying for several nights, you will be at the clinic around the clock and will not be able to leave the clinic during the day.
Why do I need to use an approved contraceptive?
The requirement to use contraception is a precautionary measure to prevent pregnancy during the study, as it is not known for certain how the study drug might affect pregnancy. This is standard practice in clinical research.
Will I be compensated for participating?
Many studies offer financial compensation and travel reimbursement as compensation for your time. The compensation is based on the time you spend on the study, which is why the amount varies from one study to another. Read more about the terms and conditions for each study.
Do you have to pay taxes on the compensation you receive for participating in a study?
Yes, the compensation is taxable. Deductions will be made for the meals served at the clinic in accordance with the Swedish Tax Agency’s rules for the current year, to ensure that you are not subject to fringe benefit tax.
Why is tax deducted from the travel allowance?
When you participate in a study and receive a fee as well as reimbursement for your expenses, such as travel, the entire payment is considered taxable compensation under the Swedish Tax Agency’s rules. This means that we are required to withhold tax on both the fee and the travel reimbursement before the money is paid out. To ensure that you still receive reimbursement for your actual expenses, we therefore increase the travel reimbursement before tax is withheld. This way, the amount you receive after taxes corresponds to the cost of your out-of-pocket expenses.
Are you considered an employee of CTC while participating in a study?
No, you will not be employed by CTC, and participating in a study does not mean that you have worked at CTC. According to the Swedish Tax Agency’s rules, we are required to pay employer contributions (social security contributions) when we pay taxable compensation totaling more than 1,000 kronor per year to an individual, which is why social security contributions are included on the pay stub.
